- Robert C. (Bob) Johnsen passed away peacefully on September 16, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92. Born on February 11, 1924 to Norwegian immigrants Christian and Agnes Johnsen, Bob grew up in San Francisco. He was a star athlete in high school, and developed an early love of the outdoors. Bob spent many weeks with his brother Ralph camping on the Russian River in Sonoma County. After high school, Bob moved to Washington, where he attended WSU before the outbreak of World War II. He enlisted in the Navy in early 1943, and saw action in numerous major engagements, including Italy, Normandy and Okinawa.
Following the war, Bob returned to Washington, enrolled at UW and met and married Maudie Boyle. They had four children together (Gina, Mark, Ken and Stan) before Maudie's death in 1955. Left with four small children, Bob raised them as a single father. With the help of Maudie's family, Bob provided a secure and loving environment. He passed along a love of learning and gave them a childhood filled with snow skiing, water sports and weekends at Lake Spanaway. Bob taught biology at Highline High School for 25 years, where he left a positive impact on thousands of students as well as teaching colleagues.
In 1970, Bob married Vera Kowing, who became his life partner for 46 years. They shared a deep love, and embarked on a successful partnership in real estate investment and rentals. Bob and Vera treasured time with family and friends. They enjoyed golf and spending time at their Three Tree Point homes and favorite getaways, including Hawaii, Arizona and Cannon Beach.
Bob was loved and respected by everyone who knew him. His warmth and genuine interest in people made each individual feel appreciated and special. He will not be forgotten. Bob is survived by his wife Vera; daughter Gina (Vince); sons Mark (Lynne), Ken (Stacy) and Stanton (Stacey); as well as stepdaughters Linda Maudslien and Diane Kong (Mike) and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
